Cutting Siding For Window Trim

Place the piece of siding to be installed under the window along the bottom edge and hold it where it will be located.

Away from the jamb at both ends and along the base. Place the top piece and hold the trim 3 16 in. Check the fit then cut. Gap for every 18 ft.

After installation cover the gap with acrylic or urethane caulk. Provide increased spacing along the trim if specified by the siding application instructions. Make the line as dark as possible so it s visible when you re cutting it. See diagram 2e 4a.

It s normally a cost cutting measure when done at the corners they don t have to be careful or precise about the corner cut etc. Touch up the divided hardie trim boards before trimming them to your window. Face nail trims using 2 inch 16 gauge finish nails after every 16 inches apart. Use a carpenter s square to draw the line straight.

Exterior trim over siding i have never seen it on window door trim but seen plenty on door window trim. If you re installing trim in temps higher than 80 degrees f cut pieces to fit tightly. Do not miter corner joints of band boards fascia corner trim etc. Cut a 45 degree angle on one end of the trim and hold.

If you re cutting dark vinyl siding use chalk or light colored tape to mark the line you want to cut. Instruction on how to install exterior 2x4 trim around a new or old window. Lock the notched. You will see the trims lay nice and flat.
